There are a lot of awesome things about pregnancy — and some not-as-great parts: like figuring out how to get dressed as your bump keeps growing. That’s why it helps to have some key maternity clothes that are comfortable, practical, and still make you feel stylish. And, as of late, one of those items is maternity overalls.
When I was pregnant with my last baby, I reached for my maternity overalls over and over again — even more than my maternity jeans and maternity leggings. And they’ve become a daily choice for many other pregnant women as well.
Since there's no waistband, you don’t need to hide a gaping jean button under an oversized top, wear pants extenders or worry about the dreaded waistband roll down. They also cover most of your torso, so you can get away with wearing non-maternity shirts underneath them for a little longer.
Aside from the practicality, maternity overalls can be super comfy thanks to the stretchy fabric and side panels. They seamlessly expand as your bump grows, then can shrink back down to become your favorite postpartum clothing item. And they’re especially great for moms who’ve had C-sections and may not want any pressure around their incision area.
How we chose the best maternity overalls
Many moms-to-be may be turned off by the idea of maternity overalls, with memories of too-tight, too-itchy, too-stiff overalls running through their head. But as a mom of three who wore overalls almost exclusively during her last pregnancy, I can assure you that overalls can be a comfy, chic maternity wardrobe item. The key is knowing what to look for.
Leaning on my personal experience, as well as feedback from What to Expect community members, the best maternity overalls are:
- Made of soft, stretchy fabric, such as cotton, spandex, or some sort of blend
- Have adjustable features, like adjustable straps or ties, to ensure they grow with your body
- Work with a wide range of bodies due to adjustable features or by offering a wide range of sizes
- Able to be worn comfortably postpartum as well, and provide additional features like nursing-friendly panels to extend their wear
- Are in a versatile wash that can be paired with lots of tops you already own
I narrowed down a list of dozens of maternity overalls to the 11 best, all of which received rave reviews for the above criteria. We also prioritized maternity overalls that had nursing-friendly features, such as shoulder straps that easily clasp on and off and a dropped waist, to extend the wear beyond pregnancy.

Why We Love It
The soft and stretchy denim combined with the affordable price point make these Isabel Maternity overalls a solid pick for every mom-to-be. Although there are no visible elastic side panels like on other pairs, the fabric will comfortably expand throughout all three trimesters. Plus, that means you can wear them postpartum.
We love that these are stretchy but not super baggy, giving moms-to-be have a more put together look. Due to the ankle length, these will likely be full-length on petite people and more cropped for those on the taller side. The front buckle straps are easy to remove, making these convenient for breastfeeding postpartum as well.

Why We Love It
With over 4,000 5-star reviews, we’re surprised these maternity overalls don’t sell out on a regular basis. Available in sizes up to 5X, these Amazon overalls are one of the most size-inclusive options on the market. Many moms-to-be say the super stretchy material allowed them to wear the overalls throughout their entire pregnancy, and even into the postpartum period. The fabric is also light and breathable, which is especially nice if the pregnancy hormones have you feeling hotter than normal.
Moms-to-be praise the overalls for being extremely stylish, which isn’t always a guarantee with plus-size maternity clothes. The harem-style legs have elastic at the bottom, making these overalls easy to adjust for various heights, while elastic bow straps give it some whimsy. (They also make it easy to adjust the size and wear while nursing.)
The only downside to these otherwise perfect maternity overalls is that they have to be hung dry — no tossing them into the dryer for easy cleaning.

- Button-adjustable straps
- Elastic back
Cons
- Limited sizes
- Expensive
Material: 95% cotton, 5% spandex
Size Range: S - L
Why We Love It
Stowaway’smaternity overalls are a fantastic option for cooler weather, thanks to the thicker corduroy material. But don’t worry about them being stiff; moms-to-bay say the overalls are surprisingly soft on the skin. The elastic back waist and adjustable straps with button closures ensure the overalls can be worn no matter your bump’s size. And unlike other overalls, the straps on these can go either straight or criss-crossed in the back, the latter of which may provide more support for your growing breasts. We also love that these can be machine-washed and tumble-dried for maximum ease.
Best Linen Maternity Overall

Buying Options
Pros
- Very roomy
- Tons of color options
- Wide range of sizes
Cons
- Not the sturdiest material
Material: Cotton linen
Size Range: S - 3XL
Why We Love It
The soft linen fabric on these Amazon overalls helps to keep already too-hot pregnancy bodies cool. While they aren’t technically maternity overalls, hundreds of moms-to-be wore them comfortably during their pregnancies. Thanks to adjustable button straps, these breathable linen overalls are easy to customize for every stage of pregnancy. Although they are very baggy and bump-accommodating, ust note that these aren’t super stretchy, so we’d recommend sizing up from your normal size. We love that the sizing goes up to 3XL, making them a great find for every expecting person. Of course, like all linen clothing, these will wrinkle easily.

Why We Love It
These skinny indigo blue denim overallsfeature a frayed hem and large rips at the knees to lend a cool, laid-back vibe that’s perfect for errands or a meal with friends. A knit elastic side panel stretches to expand with your bump, making them a perfect fit (literally) throughout each trimester. The super stretch of the denim makes these a comfortable pick even as your bump grows, and the wash pairs well with a wide range of t-shirts and sweaters you probably already have. One thing to note: Several moms-to-be did share that people with longer torsos should consider sizing up for length.

These straight leg maternity overalls will become an instant maternity wardrobe staple. The distressed look is super on-trend, but more importantly, they’re incredibly comfortable thanks to the soft stretch denim. The elastic side panels make them a pair that will grow with your bump, and the thicker denim will work through multiple seasons, which is always a win. Why We Love It
This basic black jumpsuit can easily be dressed up or down, so you’ll get a lot of wear out of it. And because it’s a pull-on style (i.e. no zippers or buttons) it’s easy for you to put on and take off when you have to pee. The flattering V-neck has some extra stretch to accommodate your growing breasts. This also makes the overalls ideal for postpartum wear: If you decide to nurse, you can easily pull the top to the side for easy access. Though the wide legs are cropped, they’d be full length on a petite person.

Why We Love It
Made of soft and stretchy cotton jersey, Storq’s maternity overalls are comfortable enough for all day wear. They are also super roomy, which not only assures they’ll grow with your body, but makes basic things — like going to the bathroom — a breeze. And if you’re on the shorter side, you can easily roll up the pant legs to get the right length, which is exactly what I did throughout two pregnancies with these. I particularly loved the lightweight fabric, especially on days when the thought of wearing thick and heavy denim j sounded too constricting.
I also wore these postpartum, thanks to nursing-friendly features like the super stretchy fabric that easily pulled to the side when I needed to feed. Again, they are on the pricier side for maternity clothes, but considering how often I wore them during and after both pregnancies, I’d say they were well worth the splurge.

How to shop for maternity overalls
When shopping for the perfect pair of maternity overalls, keep the following things in mind:
- Sizing:Though you may initially think you need to size up during pregnancy, maternity clothes are designed to mimic your typical size. (So, if you’re usually a size 8, opt for a size 8 in maternity wear.) Still, like any garment you’re purchasing — pregnant or not — it’s wise to check reviews. If others consistently say something runs large, you may even want to size down; likewise, if something runs small, you may want to size up.
- Fabric:Denim may look nice, but the stiff fabric may not be the most comfortable during pregnancy. Not to mention the lack of give means it won’t grow as your body does. For maximum comfort and longevity, look for materials with some stretch, like cotton or spandex. If you’re going to be pregnant in the warmer months, you may want to consider more lightweight and breathable fabrics like linen and cotton.
- Fit:Chances are you don’t want anything too tight, since this could restrict movement or begin to feel too compressing as your belly grows. To ensure comfort, look for roomier cuts and more relaxed fits in your maternity overalls.
- Adjustability:Many overalls are adjustable — great for your growing baby bump — but note that some options are not. Typically, denim overalls have straps complete with adjustable hardware that can help accommodate a growing belly, while cotton or linen options tend to have more limited button or tie closures. Also pay attention to whether the overalls have side panels or an over-the-belly band, which tends to be a personal preference that expecting people may have strong opinions on.
FAQ
Are overalls ok to wear when pregnant?
Maternity overalls are a great choice for pregnancy wear; their roomy design allows them to grow with your body. Just make sure to purchase maternity specific ones, or size up in non-maternity overalls so as not to put uncomfortable pressure on your belly as it grows.
Do you buy maternity overalls in your normal size?
More often than not, you can order maternity overalls in your pre-pregnancy size. But it’s wise to check reviews to see if a pair of pregnancy overalls tends to run big or small, and adjust your sizing accordingly.
